How to Build a Corrugated Metal Panel Privacy Fence

Building a corrugated metal panel privacy fence is a manageable project for homeowners with basic construction skills. The materials are straightforward — steel panels, posts, rails — and the installation process is similar to building any fence, with the addition of metal panel handling and fastening. This guide covers the complete installation process for a horizontal-panel residential privacy fence.

Design and Planning

Before purchasing materials, decide:

  • Fence height: Most residential privacy fences are 6 feet. Fence height affects post depth and the number of panels needed per bay.
  • Panel orientation: Horizontal (modern, contemporary) or vertical (traditional, agricultural). This guide covers horizontal.
  • Post spacing: 8 feet on center is standard for 6-foot fences. Wider spacing requires larger post sizes.
  • Post system: In-ground concrete, post anchors (surface-mounted brackets), or existing post retention.

Materials for a 6-Foot Horizontal Panel Fence

Per 8-foot bay:

  • 2–3 panels per row × 3 rows high = 6–9 panels per bay (depends on panel overlap and exact height)
  • 2 steel or treated wood posts (set 8 feet apart on center)
  • Top rail (1.5-inch square tube steel or 2×4 pressure-treated)
  • Self-drilling screws with EPDM washers

Step 1: Set Posts

Mark post locations every 8 feet along the fence line. Dig holes 30–36 inches deep (below frost line for Nevada and foothill properties; 24 inches adequate for Sacramento Valley). Set posts in concrete, checking for plumb on both faces. Allow concrete to cure 48 hours before continuing.

Step 2: Install Rails

For a 6-foot fence, install horizontal rails at three heights: 6 inches from the top (top rail), 36 inches from the bottom (mid rail), and 6 inches from the bottom (bottom rail). Rails span between posts and provide the fastening surface for the panels.

Step 3: Install Panels

Start at one post and work in one direction. For horizontal orientation, position the first panel with the corrugations horizontal, one corrugation of the bottom panel going under the bottom edge of the next panel above. Fasten through each corrugation valley into the rail behind at every rail crossing.

Check level on each panel as you go. Metal panels can shift slightly during installation; correct as you progress rather than after several panels are in place.

Step 4: Cap and Finish

Install a top cap (L flashing or custom cap trim) along the top edge to cover the raw panel edge and direct water off the fence rather than down the panel face. At corners, use inside or outside corner trim as appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far apart should posts be for a metal panel fence?

8 feet on center is standard for 6-foot residential fences using standard post sizes. Wider spacing requires larger posts (3×3 or 4×4 square steel) and is typically not recommended for residential fence heights.

Do I need a permit for a metal panel fence?

Most Sacramento-area jurisdictions require permits for fences over 7 feet. Fences under 7 feet on residential property are typically exempt, but HOA rules may require approval regardless of city permits. Check both before starting.
