Why Accessories Matter
Corrugated metal panels cover the main roof surface, but every edge, transition, and peak is a potential water entry point. Accessories are what close those gaps. A roof installed without proper ridge caps, drip edges, and flashing will leak within the first rain season — not because the panels failed, but because the unprotected openings allow water to run under or behind the metal.
Using color-matched accessories rather than unpainted aluminum or mismatched trim also makes a significant visual difference. A dark gray panel with a dark gray ridge cap and dark gray flashing looks like a professional, finished installation. The same panels with unpainted aluminum trim look unfinished and reduce curb appeal on residential and commercial buildings alike.
Ridge Caps
Ridge caps seal the peak of a gable roof where two roof planes meet. The open corrugated profile at the peak creates gaps large enough for water, birds, and insects to enter — a ridge cap closes those gaps and creates a clean, weather-tight apex. Ridge caps are 10ft lengths and should be installed with roofing screws and butyl tape or closure strips along the panel corrugations to create a complete seal. Overlap ridge cap sections by at least 6 inches where two sections meet on a long ridge run. Use a factory-formed ridge cap designed for the corrugated panel profile rather than field-bent flat stock — the factory profile conforms to the panel corrugations and requires less sealant to achieve a tight fit.
L Flashing — 2×2 Profile
The 10ft 2×2 L flashing is the most versatile trim piece on a metal roof or wall installation. It handles eave drip edges, rake edges, wall-to-roof connections, and exposed panel edges on siding installations. The 2×2 profile means each leg of the L is 2 inches wide — suitable for standard residential and light commercial applications where the panel thickness and substrate depth fit within a 2-inch leg.
Common uses for 2×2 L flashing:
Eave drip edge — prevents water from wicking back under the panel bottom edge
Rake edge on gable ends — creates a finished edge where the roof ends at the gable wall
Wall flashing — transitions where a metal panel roof meets a vertical wall
Siding edge trim — finishes the top or bottom edge of a metal siding panel run
Fence cap — caps the top of a corrugated metal privacy fence to prevent water intrusion

Inside Corner L Flashing
Inside corner flashing handles the transition at inside corners — where two panels or two walls meet at a concave angle. This occurs at the intersection of a roof and a wall (where a shed roof meets the house wall, for example), at building corners on metal siding installations, and at any location where the panel surface turns inward.
The 10ft inside corner L flashing is designed for these transitions. Like the 2×2 L flashing, it is available in all six panel colors and in 10ft lengths. Use it with sealant or butyl tape on the lapping leg to create a waterproof inside corner seal.
Roofing Screws and Fasteners
The fastener is where most metal roof leaks originate — not from the panels themselves, but from improper screw installation. Corrugated metal roofing requires screws with a rubber or EPDM sealing washer that compresses against the panel face when driven to correct torque. The washer creates a waterproof seal around the fastener hole.
Key points for roofing screw installation:
Drive screws at the panel valley (low point of the corrugation), not at the crown — valleys sit flat on the purlin for a solid fastening point
Drive screws straight, not angled — an angled screw compresses the washer unevenly and creates a leak path
Torque the screw until the washer compresses slightly and flattens out — overdriving crushes the washer and underdriving leaves a gap
Use screws long enough to penetrate the purlin or decking by at least 1 inch
For 26 gauge panels on wood purlins, #10 or #12 self-drilling screws with hex washer heads and EPDM sealing washers are standard
Closure Strips
Closure strips fill the open corrugated gaps at the eave, ridge, and wall connections. The corrugation profile leaves open voids between a flat surface and the panel face — large enough for insects and small animals to enter, and significant enough to allow wind-driven rain infiltration. Foam closure strips are pre-formed to the corrugated panel profile and come in inside (fitting under the panel from below) and outside (fitting over the panel from above) configurations.
Install outside closures at the eave before laying the bottom row of panels. Install inside closures along the top edge of each panel run before installing the ridge cap. For wall connections, use appropriately sized closure strips to fill the gap between the panel and the flashing leg.
